DPPP is a probe that reacts stoichiometrically with hydroperoxides to yield the fluorescent molecule diphenyl-1-pyrenylphosphine oxide (DPPP-O). Plasma levels of lipid hydroperoxides of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, triglycerides, and cholesteryl esters have been measured by HPLC with a post column detection system using DPPP. DPPP has also been used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of low-density lipoprotein and cellular oxidation. Fluorescence of DPPP-O can be monitor using excitation and emission wavelengths of 351 nm and 380 nm, respectively.

DPPP exhibits aggregation induced luminescence (AIE) behavior in H2O/EtOH mixed systems, with an alpha AIE value of 126.1. It exhibits unique fluorescence characteristics dependent on water phase ratios in single-molecule, dimer, and aggregated states.

DPPP (10 μmol/L; 3 min irradiated with 365 nm UV light at 12.8 mW/cm2 )After 365 nm UV irradiation (12.8mW/cm2 treatment for 3 minutes), a photo triggered oxidation reaction will occur to generate O-DPPP, which will transform from AIE molecules to ACQ molecules and exhibit significant fluorescence changes in pure EtOH and pure H2O.
